Growing Up… appeals to readers of many types of books, including business history and business practice books, Northwest history, nostalgic coming-of-age stories, and those focusing on the Greatest Generation.  Plus, I did new research in writing the book and discovered the role that war surplus stores played in the development of outdoor and sporting goods merchandise and general retail stores after World War II.

The book is 231 pages with over 80 photos and sells for $14.95.  Growing Up With G.I. Joe’s is also available on Amazon, including as a Kindle e-book.  You can also preview the first few chapters of the book at the Kindle e-book page on Amazon,

Happy Holidays!

“Growing Up With G.I. Joe’s” Will Be Featured at Book Event Sunday, December 6 in Downtown Portland

display.table.425.10.15

The Oregon Historical Society is putting on its yearly Holiday Cheer event this Sunday, December 6, from noon to 4:30 at their 1200 S.W. Park Avenue headquarters on the Park blocks in Portland.  Around 85 Oregon authors will be taking part, selling and signing their books.  And my new book will be sold at Holiday Cheer, too.  Just look for a display of Growing Up With G.I. Joe’s books in the OHS Museum store.

Holiday Cheer sounds fun!  Besides books and authors, OHS promises carols and hot cocoa to get attendees in a holiday spirit.

What Fun! The Book Launch Party in the Portland area on November 14 Rocked

party.group.c.425

I so enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new ones at the Growing Up With G.I. Joe’s book launch party Saturday, November 14th at McCuddy’s Island Marina on Hayden Island on the Columbia River in Portland!

I gave a short talk about the G.I. Joe’s story told in the book, and also introduced my brother, longtime CEO of G.I. Joe’s David Orkney, and Bob and Lila Schlecht of Bob’s Sporting Goods in Longview, Washington, along with their son, Bob, Jr.  After the talk, I happily signed many books.

Party host Mike McCuddy threw such a good party at his marina showroom, serving delicious appetizers and beverages, with a trio getting us in the spirit with Cuban music.  This combo of boats and books proved to be a winning one!

Thank you, Mike, and thank you Kathy McCuddy Johnson for planning the party!  What fun it was and a different and winning way to celebrate a book’s publication.
